A dashcam video captured a rare moment of kindness amidst Singapore’s bustling traffic when two motorists stopped to rescue a reptile attempting to cross a busy road on 22 March 2025.
The incident, which occurred around 10.19am along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, showed a motorcyclist and a Lalamove lorry driver working together to save what many social media users have identified as a terrapin, though it was initially labeled as a tortoise in the original post.
Quick-thinking motorists halt traffic to save crawling terrapin
In the dashcam footage uploaded to the SG Road Vigilante – SGRV Facebook page on 23 March, a vehicle can be seen slowing down as the reptile slowly crawls across the rightmost lane of the three-lane road, just before a traffic crossing.

A motorcyclist then pulls over beside the grass verge, approximately 30cm in front of the animal. His pillion rider alights first, followed by the motorcyclist who signals to a Lalamove lorry that had stopped in the adjacent lane.
The motorcyclist carefully picked up the reptile with both hands and placed it in the bed of the lorry. The lorry driver acknowledged the patience of other motorists who had stopped behind him with a wave before driving off with the rescued animal.
It remains unknown whether the terrapin was later handed over to a wildlife rescue center.
Singapore’s wildlife crossing challenges spark calls for driver awareness
The terrapin was lucky to escape the fate that has befallen other wildlife on Singapore’s roads.Recent incidents involving macaques have ended tragically.
On 20 March, a video uploaded on the Singapore roads accident.com Facebook page showed a troop of monkeys darting across a road, with one being hit by an oncoming car. Another monkey was seen weaving through traffic and sliding under a black car to cross safely.
In a separate post on 22 March on the same page, a user described witnessing a “horrifying event” when a baby monkey was run over by a small van near Upper Pierce Reservoir Park.
The National Parks Board has previously urged motorists to stay vigilant while driving in areas known for wildlife crossings, such as Mandai.
The board advises against handling injured wild animals and encourages the public to report urgent wildlife rescue cases to the 24-hour Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600.

The terrapin rescue video has gathered over 22,000 views since being shared, with netizens praising the motorists for their thoughtful gesture.
One commenter noted that the reptile might actually be an abandoned terrapin, adding a reminder that people shouldn’t adopt tortoises as pets unless they can commit to caring for them for decades.
