One community store that recently opened in Mountbatten is doing just that.

Mountbatten Community Store Gives Free Food To The Needy

Unbeknownst to some, food is still a scarcity for many Singaporeans who struggle to put food on their plates every day.

This is why initiatives like these are so important.

A community store in Mountbatten has open to offer a more targeted approach to provide free food for the needy in the area.

The shop offers only donated items on its shelves and provides free groceries and food rations for the less fortunate.

Individuals can go into the store and choose items that they need which offers an efficient and specific food donation system.

An Initiative By Charity ‘Food From The Heart”

The store is an initiative by charity “Food from the Heart” and can be found at Block 13 Old Airport Road.

It is currently being run by volunteers and has begun operations since February.

It serves beneficiaries from up to 500 needy households located in the Mountbatten and MacPherson neighbourhoods.

Before this initiative, the beneficiaries were given pre-packed hampers of donated food provided by social service centres. This meant that they were not able to choose what they wanted.

The existence of this community store gives beneficiaries the ability to choose up to 12 products on a monthly basis.

Once they have chosen their desired items, they will then scan their beneficiary cards at the counter of the store to “buy” the items to stimulate an “ordinary shopping experience”.

The Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee explains that “Being able to select what they want is an intangible and valuable gift. Beyond the food item, you give residents a choice. I think that’s very powerful.”

This will also allow the charity to collect the data and analyse dietary preferences and restrictions and will be a part of a study spanning a year which will allow for more targeted food donation system which caters to the specific needs of its beneficiaries.

Members Of the Public Can DonateĀ

If you are a kind soul who’s interested in donating, the community store is accepting donations and has a list of food items needed.
