That’s because Cats isn’t just a musical. It’s the latest attempt by some forward-looking people in Hollywood to bring musicals kicking and screaming into the 21st-century.
By making it into a movie.

Unfortunately, It Flopped At The Box Office
There’s a saying we always use at Goody Feed: different platforms have a different audience.
We try bringing Facebook users over to our Youtube channel all the time.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work because most Facebook users who never go to Youtube will not do so, even if you got the best content on that platform because the content offered is different.
And moviegoers who are used to the likes of Fast & Furious and Ip Man 4 might not be able to appreciate musicals.
Even if they’re extremely immersive like Cats.
The movie, Cats, was said to cost $100 million to produce, and another $95 to $100 million to market to audiences.
Unfortunately, the movie only grossed $6.5 million on its opening weekend and now, only grossed $17.8 million so far.

Taken Too Seriously
When you think of cats, you think grumpy, fun and quirky. They’re serious most of the time, but if you’re a cat lover, you can’t take them seriously. At all.
And Cats, the musical, was similar with “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s off-kilter stage production”.
The movie, moviegoers and critics think, was too serious and it came off as joyless, bland and just sad.
And if you can’t tell by the synopsis, it didn’t help that the movie lacked a concrete plot.
The director of Cats, the movie, Tom Hooper, also mentioned that he was in a rush to complete the movie in time for the deadline.

He added that the movie was only completed at 8am the day before the movie premiere.
Although the movie is still experiencing a slump, optimists are still hopeful that the movie will gain traction as time passes since negative reviews might make people curious enough to check it out for themselves.

Should You Watch It?
Maybe on New Year’s Eve?
That depends.
If you’re someone who appreciates a musical, it might be a great opportunity to be immersed fully into an award-winning musical.
