Bakkwa, as we all know, is generally made of pork, unless otherwise stated.
But sometimes, even stating the non-obvious can result in “Sorry this content isn’t available right now.”
When we see this on Facebook, we generally know someone tio dai ji liao.

Let me explain.

“Enjoy a combo deal of our new Vegetarian Bak Kwa Eggwich aka the B.K.E & Black Soya milk at $4.20!”

Well, this sentence is a lot to unpack.
There’s a portmanteau ‘Eggwich’, an expressway-acronym-ed Bak Kwa Eggwich aka B.K.E and also the fact that the “Vegetarian” preceding Bak Kwa is paradoxical.
Apparently, one man took it further as he couldn’t digest the fact that Mr Bean, the local brand that sells soya bean-related snacks and drinks, was now selling a vegetarian bakkwa sandwich.
Mothership reported yesterday that a man had on Dec 17, posted a photo of a Mr Bean poster advertising Vegetarian Bak Kwa Eggwich two days before its official unveiling on Dec 19.
According to Mothership, “He then imposed the words “Not funny Mr Bean” and “No halal” over the image and shared it to Facebook” alongside a photo caption which read: “Mr Bean now serve Bak Kwa. Now i kenot enjoy ur pancake”
(FYI “kenot” means “cannot”. I love Singlish seh)
The post has since been taking down, leading to the said “Sorry this content isn’t available right now” red flag.

Halal or not
You can tell that the man’s gripe came from the fact that Mr Bean had decided to sell a ‘bakkwa sandwich’ which this man presumably couldn’t eat due to restrictions.
Except that Mr Bean had transparently shared that this “Bakkwa” was vegetarian and “consists mainly of textured wheat protein, textured soy protein & mushroom fibre.”
Keen-eyed netizens soon jumped onto his gastronomic bandwagon which resulted in ” over 140 comments and over 1,700 shares” yesterday as at 3PM before it was subsequently taken down, this according to Mothership.
This was when the wheels of the bandwagons truly came rolling off.
While some shared the same sentiments as this man:

Others were quick explain that Mr Bean was never Halal-certified to begin with:
Others like forum-mer amazingone pointed out that it was clearly vegetarian:
What’s in a name
In a bid to quell his slippery descent on his two wheel-less bandwagon, the man followed up with a post yesterday, presumably before rendering it non-existent.
In it, he apologizes for the post and shared what was presumably the root cause for his post and all his subsequent woes.
That in itself the word “Bak Kwa” can “create confusion as we all know its derive [sic] from meat product.”

That aside, we “all know” too that Social Media is a dangerous web don’t we?
Never mind right or wrong, for which there isn’t any in this case; let’s just think twice before we post anything on Facebook eh?
Else you will be blasted into space like our beloved Admiral.
But anywaysssssss…Bak Kwa Eggwich does indeed sound interesting. Let’s see if we can steal our boss’s credit card and buy one for a review.
