Everything About the Death of a Person Who Was Run Over by an MRT Train Near Kallang MRT Station That is Known So Far

After receiving the tragic news that three people had died in an industrial building fire in Tuas yesterday, the night brought in another horrific news: a person was killed after he was run over by an MRT train near Kallang MRT Station.

It has since been reported that the person had entered the track through the tunnel near Lavender MRT Station, and was hit by a train that was heading towards the east near Kallang MRT Station.

Here’s what is known so far.

Yesterday (25 Feb), at about 9:48pm, SMRT tweeted that that was a disruption between Bugis MRT Station and Aljunied MRT Station. That comprises four stations,  and it was attributed to an “incident”.

Free regular bus and bus bridging services were activated.

It was reported extensively that a person had died near the station, and at 1:05am, SMRT provided more details in a Facebook post.

They said that at about 9pm yesterday, “a train captain reported hitting an object near Kallang MRT station. Our station manager was sent on track and found a motionless man, about 150 metres from Kallang MRT station.

“SCDF and the police were immediately activated. We are saddened that the person was subsequently pronounced dead and we convey our deepest condolences to the family. SMRT Care Team was deployed to render assistance.”

The Straits Times: Person Has Entered a Tunnel Near Lavendar MRT Station

Lest you’re not aware, the underground tunnel ends somewhere between Lavender MRT Station and Kallang MRT Station.

CNA reported that later that night, people from different agencies were on the track, and the K-9 dog unit was involved.

The Straits Times understands that a person has allegedly entered the tunnel near Lavender MRT Station from a portal area, but it’s unknown how he managed to get in.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Pasir Ris MRT Accident

The last time an incident like this happened was back in 2016, which was also known to be “the worst train accident” in Singapore MRT’s history.

Back then, a team of 15 people were deployed to fix a problem on the track near Pasir Ris MRT Station, and an incoming train killed 2 of them while the rest managed to jump to safety.

After an internal investigation, SMRT dismissed both the engineer who led the track team and the train driver involved at the scene of the accident. The engineer was also jailed for four weeks.
