If you’ve been in the workforce long enough, you’ll definitely have experienced or at least heard your fair share of “boss-related horror stories” that you wouldn’t hesitate to share with your friends and family.

In fact, if you’re on the receiving end of those horror stories, you’ll probably resign faster than you could say “Good Riddance!”

However, for one Twitter user at least, his resignation ended up being such an emotional one, not just for himself but for his boss as well.

Being the Only Malay Boy in the Office was Never an Issue

Sodiqin from Georgetown, Penang was part of a sales team at a company.  The team had 11 people at first but slowly they started to leave one-by-one, and when the pandemic struck, the department was whittled down to 5.

According to an interview with World of Buzz, Sodiqin said, “All five of us had been multitasking together and we just love our job so much.”

Despite being the only “Malay Boy” in an office of Chinese colleagues, Sodiqin never felt left out.

“Although all of them were Chinese, they paid attention to little details to make me feel comfortable, like making sure I have disposable cutlery when hanging out with them – cause they would eat non-halal food and would pack halal food just for me.”

“Or they would always find a halal cafe to hang out, made sure I stay halal when they would drink, and would always make sure I’m alright in the office. There is so much more of these little things they did that made a big impact.”

“There are just too many times that they would stand up for me in the company. It took a toll on me when I had to leave. They were family to me,” Sodiqin added.

Torn between the Team He Loves and His Future

Everything would have been rainbows and unicorns if there weren’t issues between the company’s management and the sales team, which made both Sodiqin and his colleagues feel like they couldn’t grow with the company anymore.

Despite knowing the truth, their love for their colleagues and their job kept them going for a long while, but eventually, reality came knocking on their door.

All of them, except their boss, ended up deciding to hand in their resignation letters.

The decision wasn’t easy mainly because they all knew that the boss couldn’t afford to leave her job.

However, Sodiqin decides to send his boss a farewell gift so she could remember him and his colleagues by.

“I decided to buy her a plant because her (current) plant in the office won’t grow. And, I made eight keychains with pictures of the five of us throughout our time there.”

The Difference between a Good Boss and a Great One

Moved by his thoughtful and emotion-evoking gift, Sodiqin’s boss who is dubbed as “OLS” in his video, told him, “Can you not make me cry?”

However, the waterworks started gushing as emotions run high and the dam eventually broke.

Between sobs and emotional hugs, the boss apologised to Sodiqin, “You shouldn’t get this kind of treatment, you shouldn’t. I’m so sorry, Qin.

“I’m useless… I can’t protect you.”

It’s obvious that she knew and wished that Sodiqin and his colleagues would now be able to go to a much better place to work, but it’s also obvious that she’s reluctant to part with a team she has grown so close with over the years.

“One hand I wish you continue to stay but the other hand, I have to let you go.”

She added, “You go (to a) new place; you will get a better treatment than this.”

“I feel blessed I have you all.”

Since the video was picked up by the World of Buzz, the Tweet was deleted along with the video.

You can only wonder why.
