Back in 2007, when I was a wee 12-year-old kid, I once demanded asked of my Mum:

“If I get 300 out of 300 for my PSLE get me the latest Gameboy Advance SP okay?”

And she said yes. Delighted, I began studying earnestly. But as it turns out I didn’t get 300; I got a rather paltry sum, but my mum got it for me anyway.

“It’s the effort that counts,” she said.

Fast forward eleven years, to the perusal of this article:

The Boy Who Saved

On 15 Dec, Twitter user @farhanailiasa (also known as Farhana) posted a tweet of her 12-year-old brother, Irfan, getting a brand new PS4. But if you’re wondering why this is headline news, check this out;

The young boy actually paid for the game console with a year’s worth of savings:

RM600 made entirely of RM1 notes.

Businessman in the making

According to Farhana, Irfan had a lofty secret to saving money:

Good old entrepreneurship.

For apparently, the 12-year-old boy collects comic books.

Which he proceeds to loan to his friends for some extra moolah.

Translation: “Just to let you guys know, my brother is a comic collector. So he has a mini business loaning his comics to his friends. That’s how he started collecting money.”

But wait just a bloody min…

Are PS4s that cheap over in Malaysia? RM600? That’s like…

Less than 200 bucks over here!

Well as it turns out, they aren’t actually that cheap. In fact, a PS4 Slim 500GB costs around RM1,349 over in Malaysia, which would put it around the same pedestal as its Singaporean counterparts.

“Huh then how?” you ask. “How did he pay for that with just RM600?”

Parents, Farhana revealed. According to her, her parents had done a little ‘topping up’ for the game console. Though really…

That still doesn’t take away from Irfan’s hard-earned savings.

It’s never too late to start

If you’ve always dreamt of being a budding entrepreneur, or entertained notions of becoming the next Richard Branson, here’s a quote from the legendary Wise Old Man:

“It’s never too late to start.”

And honestly, if you need some motivation, just look at 12-year-old Irfan. Granted, he might not have earned a million bucks, or cultivated a booming business…

But I dare say he’s on the way there. Earning money dough through his own efforts and reaping the benefits?
