Planning to visit Penang? Here is one place you need to check out.
On 19 November, Starbucks announced that they will be opening another signing store in Penang, Malaysia. This will be the second of its kind in Malaysia and the fourth in the entire world.
Other places that have similar signing stores include Kuala Lumpur, Guangzhou and Washington D.C.
On Facebook, Starbucks Malaysia announced that the second signing store is already officially in motion and brewing and tried to garner fellow Penangites to share the amazing news so that everyone can have fun and enjoy the unique experience.
American Sign Language is used to spell out the store sign and some of the pictures of their employees have since been put up at that particular Starbucks.
Partnership with the Penang Deaf Association
Starbucks Stories Asia reported that their signing stores were made with the intention of providing employment opportunities to the deaf and the hard of hearing.
Starbucks has even partnered up with the Penang Deaf Association to help in the development and training of the store’s seven employees, and going as far as to offer them sign language lessons and internships to gain work experience.
The Penang outlet is actually located at the centre of Penang’s deaf community.
This outlet is not only a place to get coffee but also serves as a location at which career development classes and sign language workshops can be held at.
What To Expect?
This particular Starbucks has installed various visual elements like digital trays, alarms and special systems so as to cater to the deaf or hard of hearing employees and customers.
The store is also extremely beautiful and aesthetically pleasing with a totally Instagrammable mural wall designed by a local deaf artist called Lim Anuar.
If you head over, you might also want to take a look at the store merchandise as well because all the items are exclusive to that outlet and we assure you the keychains and gift cards are worth checking out!
This signing Starbucks outlet is located at 403, Jalan Burma, Pulau Tikus, 10350 George Town, Penang. This store is open from 8am to 10pm from Sunday to Thursday and from 8am to 12am on Fridays, Saturdays and Public Holidays.
This will definitely be a unique experience so don’t say bojio hor!
