M’sian Teacher Stapled 10YO Boy’s Ear As Punishment For Not Completing Homework

Many of us would probably have been in a situation where we forgot to complete our homework and instead of admitting it, we pretend to rummage through our bags to show the teacher that we’ve forgotten to bring it to class that day.

Even though we know damn well that it’s jammed in our file in our bags.

For some reason, that seemed like less of a wrongdoing than actually admitting that we didn’t do our assignment.

Of course, we were all still punished for it by standing in class or outside of class. Some may even be lucky enough to just receive a warning from the teacher.

One 10-year-old boy in Malaysia, however, wasn’t so lucky.

Physical Harm As Punishment

He failed to finish his homework and as a result, his teacher punished him by stapling his left ear.

Yes, you read that right.

This happened on Saturday, 28 September, in a primary school in Sabah, Malaysia.

The boy’s ear bled afterwards and his mother only found out after she saw his injured ear when she picked him up from school. As any mother would, she immediately filed a police report.

Aftermath

According to AsiaOne, Dr Misterine Radin, Sabah State Education Department director, told the media during the Special Education Teachers Professionalism Course closing ceremony on Sunday that they received a report regarding this incident.

Sabah State Education and Innovation Minister YB Datuk Dr Yusof B. Yacob also added that it was his first time hearing of such an incident where a stapler was used to punish a child.

He said that educators should understand a student’s problems and treat them the way they would treat a family member. Inflicting physical harm on students may affect them psychologically.

Dr Radin further clarified that she wasn’t sure if this was the first time such an incident happened in Sabah, but a similar incident was brought up to the education department earlier this year.

Why a staple, though.

In her talk, she took the opportunity to remind teachers that punishments should only be given with the purpose of educating a child, not to physically cause harm.

She also assured everyone that the teacher in question will definitely be sent for counselling.

We hope that the boy recovers soon and that such a case will not happen again.
