M’sian Woman Shocks Doctor By Claiming Baby Urine Can Treat Oral Thrush

Simi is oral thrush?

It’s that white thing you see on the tongue in the pic; a superficial yeast infection that can appear on the inner cheeks, lips, and sometimes the gums.

And it’s most commonly seen in infants, although you can also see them in toddlers, older children and rarely adults. If you see them in non-infants, it usually suggests another medical condition like diabetes.

In the case of having some kind of medical conditions you know nothing about, the choice for me would be to search the web.

I guess I won’t be coming next week, my friends. / Image: Reddit (u/AladanRR)

The most logical conclusion if you aren’t broke or have some kind medical insurance/subsidy, is, of course, to see the doctor.

(I’m broke and stubborn, so let me continue to believe I have cancer.)

Or you can also take the old man superstition route and believe anything an older person without any medical qualification nor experience with the disease says about the symptom because… uh…

I really can’t find any reason to believe them here, sorry.

Especially since, as you’ve seen in the title, this leads someone to believe:

Baby Urine Can Treat Oral Thrush

Translation by World Of Buzz:

“Babies use diapers now so it’s hard for us to get baby’s urine on napkins, but what you can do is, you take a napkin and rub some of your baby’s urine from the diaper. After that, you can just apply the napkin into your baby’s mouth and on its tongue. Don’t forget to recite a few prayers.”

Yes… yes… all we need to stop oral thrush is to rub some baby urine.

Apply them like medicati- wait, did you say baby urine?

Reaction By Doctor Muhammad Izzat

Needless to say, an actual medically trained and certified person wouldn’t be happy to hear a superstition like that being spread around, so he started a small lecture on Muhammad Izzat, his Facebook page.

According to Dr Izzat, the white layer is “oral thrush” or “kulat susu” in Malay, which is a common fungus known to infect 1 in 20 babies. Four-week-old babies are more likely to be infected, though premature babies have a higher risk too.

Here’s the good news: it’s not harmful, so usually you don’t have to do anything and it will vanish on its own. All you need to do is make sure your baby’s mouth is clean whenever you feed him/her milk.

Here’s something you’ll want to know: the translated paragraph on the superstition was given by a woman who got the tip from her late mother and claimed that it worked on her baby.

Oh… Oh no… the baby licked his/her own pee for no reason.

But What Do We Do If It’s A Problem?

Sometimes, thrush can cause pain to the baby’s mouth and it might result in a hard time drinking milk.

In this case, you can consult a doctor to get some anti-fungal cream.

Other times, the fungus can infect the mother’s breast. If this results in redness, bleeding or swollen breasts, also see a doctor.

Reminder: Baby’s Urine Is 100% Not A Treatment For Oral Thrush

Dr Izzat also wants to assure you that babies’ urine is not a treatment.

If you try to wipe the white layer but the layer actually comes off, then this white layer is most likely just excess milk, because oral thrush will not come off.

Superstitions like this caused Dr Izzat to be pretty angry; he posted separately another time that people are willing to believe any kind of superstition given by old people and refuse to believe legitimate facts from doctors.

So here’s a word of advice from someone who works with dumb people writing nonsense on the internet and got self-diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer, cholera, diabetes, and probably have about 7 days left to live: listen to the actually qualified doctors.

(Really though, I’ll still be alive next week… right?)
