A good film has the ability to make you forget about all your troubles, even if it’s just for a few hours.
That’s why when I watched Interstellar in theatres after my girlfriend broke up with me I only cried for the first half of the movie.
Sure, people started throwing their popcorn at me because my loud crying was ruining their Nolan movie experience, and sure, by the time I stopped crying I didn’t know what the heck was going on, but still, it was a nice distraction.
With Covid-19 claiming lives, taking away jobs, and devastating businesses, a good distraction is what most of us need right now.
Sadly, if you’re a fan of the three movies listed in the headline, you might have to wait a little longer for your distraction.
Mulan, Avatar Sequel & New Star Wars Movie All Would be Delayed ‘Indefinitely’
Yesterday (23 July), Walt Disney said it has delayed the release of Mulan indefinitely, as well as the production of the Avatar sequel and the next Star Wars movie, to the dismay of cinephiles all over the globe.
Mulan was supposed to screen in theatres back in March, but its release has been postponed numerous times due to the closure of cinemas in the US.
The film had most recently been scheduled for release on 21 August, but now that date has been pushed back too, reported Reuters.
The film, which is based on the Chinese folklore The Ballad of Mulan, is the most expensive film ever made by a female director, with a production budget of US$200 million.
Just like the animated film, this movie depicts the journey of a young Chinese maiden who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.
The coronavirus pandemic has also disrupted production of The Avatar sequel, and it’s now set to debut in theatres in December 2022, which feels like a decade away.
Even if you’ve not watched Avatar you must be familiar with those blue creatures who look like the offspring of a deer, mouse and human.
For some reason, there aren’t any official trailers of Avatar 2 out, presumably because director James Cameron doesn’t want to give anything away just yet.
As for Star Wars fans, you may as well forget about the latest instalment in the much-loved franchise, because it will only hit theatres in December 2023.
“It’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis,” a Disney representative said.
Well, I think it’s safe to say that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to absolutely anything in 2020.
Tenet Delayed Too
If you thought that this was too much bad news to bear for one day and that there couldn’t possibly be any more, you must be new to 2020.
Welcome to the year, it’s horrible.
A few days ago, it was announced that Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated new film Tenet would also be delayed indefinitely due to the coronavirus situation in the US.
“Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates,” Warner Bros studio chairman Toby Emmerlich explained.
“Amidst all this continued uncertainty, we have decided to vacate the current dates for our next two releases. We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet.”
A “new 2020 release date” could be 31st December, so don’t pin too much hope on those deceptive words.
In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for shows on Netflix, even if they aren’t as good.
