Attorney-General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed on 12 Nov 2025 that investigations into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh have found no evidence linking Malaysian rapper Namewee to her demise. The 42-year-old will be released on police bail on 13 Nov while investigations continue.
Mohd Dusuki told This Week in Asia that authorities found no leads showing Namewee was involved in causing Hsieh’s death in Kuala Lumpur. Instructions for further investigations have been issued, and the Attorney General’s Chambers will take action if new leads emerge.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus confirmed that investigation papers on the murder probe were submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office on 12 Nov. Police are awaiting further directives.
Nine Days in Custody: Timeline of Investigation
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, has been in police custody for nine days. He surrendered at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at about 2am on 5 Nov and was initially remanded for six days until 10 Nov.

The remand order was extended for three more days until 13 Nov. In a video shared on his social media, he vowed to cooperate with investigations outside the police station.
“I will not run away. I voluntarily reported to the authorities for the previous seven arrest warrants. I have never run away,” he said.
Hsieh was found dead in a bathtub in a hotel room on 22 Oct. Her body was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The 31-year-old Taiwanese arrived in Malaysia on 20 Oct to work on a video collaboration with Namewee. The case was initially classified as a sudden death but was reclassified as murder on 4 Nov.
Drug Charges and Background on Both Influencers
Namewee was initially arrested for drug use and possession after several pills were seized by police during his arrest. He tested positive for drugs including Ecstasy, methamphetamine, ketamine and cannabis.
The rapper has denied any links to Hsieh’s death or taking drugs. Over the years, Namewee has had run-ins with local police for his controversial videos.
Hsieh rose to internet stardom on TikTok and OnlyFans, with fans drawn to her provocatively dressed comedic content. Police confirmed that Hsieh’s remains are still in Malaysia.
Her family members have appointed a lawyer to handle investigations in Malaysia as they are too sick to travel, according to her publicist.
Namewee rose to fame in 2007 after posting his music videos on social media, garnering millions of followers over the years. He has acted in films including Friend Zone and Nasi Lemak 1.0, and received a writer-director credit for the banned 2020 film Babi.
In 2021, the Johor-born rapper released “Fragile”, a song poking fun at Chinese nationalists. The song went viral among Mandarin-speaking audiences but was banned within days by Chinese authorities, leading to his ban in China.
