Nah Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat is a well-known eatery at North Bridge Road.
Known as the oldest fish head steamboat restaurant in Singapore, the recipe for their traditional Teochew fish head steamboat has been passed down since 1927.
Unfortunately, the eatery met with a mishap on 29 Nov 2021.

Fire Allegedly Broke Out in Kitchen Exhaust Duct in Nah Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to a fire located at 812 North Bridge Road at around 8:45pm.
The fire reportedly involved a kitchen exhaust duct (KED) and it was put out using two water jets.
Before SCDF arrived on the scene, about 20 people had self-evacuated from the premises and there were no reported injuries.

Facebook page Singapore Incidents managed to capture a 14-minute Facebook live video of the incident.
Numerous people were seen gathering on the opposite side of the road.
This includes restaurant staff who are still in their work clothes.
An elderly staff member was also filmed showing his own recording of the fire to another person.

According to him, the fire had allegedly started from the kitchen exhaust hood.
A Serious Fire
Part of the road has to be cordoned off.
Fire engines and police vehicles could be seen in the area.
Firefighters were also seen behind hard at work on-site.
The Facebook live video also filmed the shophouse emitting thick, black, noxious smoke with orange flames within.

All in all, it’s a very bad Monday for the business and some customers.

SCDF Tips For Kitchen Exhaust Fires
The SCDF has some nifty tips to prevent kitchen exhaust fires (KED).
This includes:

- NOT Leaving cooking unattended
- Keep the stove, the surrounding area and the opening of exhaust ducts free from grease and oil stains
- Maintain kitchen exhaust hoods at least once a year
- Clean the ducts often
Just a week ago, on 22 Nov 2021, about 200 employees of Shaw Centre had to self-evacuate from the premises after a fire broke out at one of its restaurants.
Preliminary investigations revealed that it was caused by an electrical circuit box.
The aftermath of the fiery incident includes the closure of several restaurants within the premises.
Which, you got to admit, is a bad start to the start of 5-pax dine-ins.
