Talk about your past coming back to sock you in the jaw.
That was probably what Singapore athlete Abdul Wafi Idris felt when a video of him bullying a student back in 2022 made the rounds on Telegram and then Reddit.
The video, which was posted on Telegram group, ‘SG SHARES’ on 28th Oct, was then shared on subreddit r/SingaporeRaw, garnering over 400 comments and 728 upvotes.
Sock it to me
In it, Abdul Wafi, who was a student at the time of filming, was shown grabbing a fellow student trying to leave and then throwing a punch that made him fall against the door of the toilet, then kneeing him in the head. The victim, unidentified, was shown curled up on the ground, as Abdul Wafi bent over to taunt him before throwing more punches and kicks at the victim’s head and body.
The video ends with Abdul Wafi dragging his victim to the camera lens and forces him to apologise for his wrongdoings.
Abdul Wafi is currently representing Singapore in the U19 World Boxing Championships in Colorado, and previous achievements include a gold medal won in the 2022 Sarawak Open Boxing Championship.
Requesting justice
Redditors who viewed the clip were mostly outraged at the video, demanding repercussions for the man in question.
Many users, for example, called for the Singapore Boxing Federation to investigate the matter, with one urging others to send letters to the organisation to take action. A template for the letter has also been shared on the subreddit.
Yet, others have cautioned restraint especially after finding out that the video has been taken in 2022, when Abdul Wafi was a 14-year-old and before he was a boxer.
“The video was years ago,” opined user OkDepartment9976. “Don’t know why it got circulated back.”
Another user also opined that since Abdul Wafi was currently 17 years old, he has been ‘putting his ways behind and starting afresh.’
“He [has] turned a new leaf and is focusing on making boxing accessible for low-income children for them to be able to box,” said the user.
Abdul Wafi’s instagram is currently inactive.
What does SBF have to say?
An SBF spokesperson has given a statement saying that the federation was aware of the video in question, giving further context to the video in question.
The spokesperson shared that Abdul Wafi took responsibility for his actions, having undergone counselling at his school, and has already reached an amicable resolution with the other party involved.
The federation was not involved with the disciplinary action as it had occurred before Wafi joined the Singapore National Boxing Team.
Wafi, the spokesperson continued, had “demonstrated significant personal growth since the incident” and has been held to the same high standards of conduct as other SBF athletes since joining the national boxing programme.
“We are confident that Mr Abdul Wafi has grown as an individual, channelling his energy productively through the sport,” the spokesperson concluded.
