Lest you’re unaware, an explosion took place at around 3:15pm at the Tuas incineration plant last Thursday, 23 September 2021, and it involved a chimney fan switch located in the switchgear room.
Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu shared that the blast “was contained within the electrical room and did not spread to the rest of the premises”. While 80 people were able to self-evacuate from the premises unharmed, three people were not so lucky.
Three Singaporean National Environment Agency (NEA) officers were in the switchgear room conducting electrical maintenance work when the explosion happened.
One of the officers was a 65-year-old senior engineering manager, and he was, unfortunately, pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic.
The other two officers – a 59-year-old and a 64-year-old – were taken to the Singapore General Hospital immediately to be treated for their burn injuries.
NEA Officer Who Was Injured in Tuas Incineration Plant Explosion Died from His Injuries
However, according to a statement by NEA on Sunday, after four days of fighting for his life, one of the injured workers has succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
He was an executive engineering manager, and just like the other two, he was a senior member of the plant’s electrical maintenance branch. All of them had “more than 35 years in service, and have contributed at (Tuas incineration plant) for many years”.
The third NEA officer who was injured is an engineering manager. He is currently still being “given medical care in the hospital’s intensive care unit”.
NEA has been keeping in close contact with the officers’ families along with the Amalgamated Union of Public Employees (AUPE) so that they can offer any type of support and assistance wherever necessary.
NEA also said that it is working with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), SCDF, other technical agencies, as well as electrical engineering experts to find out what exactly caused the explosion in the switchgear room.
