As Polling Day approaches, it seems that we are being exposed to the age-old saying of “旧的不出,新的不来.” Or as locals would infer: “If the old does not go, the new cannot come.” Because it appears that though many new faces are turning up for the upcoming GE2025, many familiar faces are also, in turn, taking their leave.

Three Nee Soon GRC MPs Retire Ahead of Election

Three Members of Parliament from Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency—Louis Ng, Carrie Tan, and Derrick Goh—have announced their retirement from politics ahead of Singapore’s upcoming General Election.

Louis Ng, who represented Nee Soon East, served as an MP for two terms. Ng, known for his advocacy on animal welfare before entering politics, became emotional during a walkabout on 22 Apr 2025 as he addressed his decision to step down.

He explained that his departure was not due to a lack of passion for the role, but rather personal reasons, including a desire to spend more time with his family and return to the non-profit sector.

Ng has three daughters—Ella, Katie, and Poppy—and shared that he missed many milestones in their lives during his decade in Parliament. He thanked Minister K Shanmugam for his mentorship and support, as well as Nee Soon residents for their trust over the years.

Carrie Tan, who represented Nee Soon South, also announced her decision to retire after one term.

Tan, 43, cited the need to make way for a younger and more energetic candidate. She expressed her affection for the Nee Soon community and highlighted initiatives she led, such as a caregiver resource centre and an upcycling library.

Tan also stated that she would continue to contribute to the community in new ways, including pursuing learning in the wellness sector. She encouraged residents to support her successor, Lee Hui Ying.

Meanwhile, Derrick Goh, who served one term as MP for Nee Soon Link, is stepping down to focus on his new position as group chief operating officer at DBS Bank.

Goh, who has worked at DBS since 2008, discussed his decision with both Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and anchor minister K Shanmugam. He said the demands of his new corporate role required his full attention, and he wanted to ensure that Nee Soon Link would continue to have the energy and focus an MP must provide.

Goh added that he would still be present in the community as he settles into his new job.

New Faces

The People’s Action Party announced on 21 Apr 2025 that four new faces—Goh Hanyan, Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Jackson Lam, and Lee Hui Ying—will join K Shanmugam in contesting Nee Soon GRC in the coming election.

Shanmugam remains the only incumbent from the 2020 slate.

The new team brings a mix of experience from the civil service, grassroots, and private sector. The changes mean that all MPs from the previous Nee Soon GRC team, except Shanmugam, are stepping down or moving to other constituencies.
