On 27 January 2025, the night before Chinese New Year Eve, a foul smell emitted from a HDB unit on the 13th floor of Block 510 West Coast Drive.
With Chinese New Year approaching, the neighbours of the unit did not report this to the police out of superstitious fears, despite suspecting that something was not right.
“Firstly, Chinese New Year was approaching, and it would have been inauspicious and uncomfortable to suggest that someone had passed away in the unit. Another thing was, if we had misconstrued the situation, it would have been a terrible misunderstanding with our neighbour,” a woman living in a nearby unit told Lianhe Zaobao.
“We truly didn’t expect that something like this would happen,”
It was only on the third day of Chinese New Year, 31 January 2025, when the stench became unbearable, that the neighbour decided to report it to the police.
Indeed, the corpse of the 53-year-old Chinese man living there was found in the unit.
According to this neighbour, the deceased was previously living in the unit with his father, but ever since his father’s passing roughly three to four years ago, he had lived alone.
The neighbour shared that the last time she had seen him was in December last year. She was unsure of what he did for a living, as he would at times disappear for months on end. Once, when he returned back home, he had shaved his head bald.
The neighbour also shared that the deceased had a married younger sister, but she rarely visited him.
Usually, nearing Chinese New Year, the deceased would clean the small shrine outside his unit. However, the neighbour did not see him doing so this year. Although she thought that that was strange, she brushed this away and assumed that he had gone overseas, or went to stay at his sister’s home.
Another male neighbour told Lianhe Zaobao that he would greet his neighbour on the occasion they met each other along the corridor. During the majority of the first two days of Chinese New Year, he and his family were out visiting their relatives, hence they did not particularly notice the foul stench, until later.
The police have confirmed that they have a received this report of unnatural death. The man was pronounced dead on scene. They have carried out further investigations and do not suspect foul play.
