Until 2016, Singaporeans only needed four things to live: water, food, air, and bubble tea.
But then Netflix entered our lives, changing it forever. Gone were the days where we’d have to wait one week for an episode of our favourite show, or rent movies online or from stores.
Now, with the click of a button or a few taps of our thumbs, we can access our favorite films and TV shows, and finish entire seasons in days.
It’s a great time to be alive, folks.
Unfortunately, this basic necessity of life is now a little pricier.
Netflix Hikes Subscription Prices in Singapore
Want to watch Squid Game all over again? Well, you’ll have to fork out a little more this month.
Netflix will be raising the price of its three subscription plans by $1 to $2, much to the dismay of writers in the Goody Feed office.
A basic plan which used to cost $11.98 will now cost $12.98.
The price of a standard plan will be raised from $15.98 to $17.48.
A premium plan, which allows titles to be streamed in Ultra HD and enables users to use up to four screens at the same time, will now cost $21.98, up from $19.98.
New subscribers will have to pay these new prices, while existing subscribers will be notified by email before the new prices are charged to their accounts.
The new prices reportedly took effect on 7 Oct. The company also reportedly hiked its prices for users in South Africa.
2nd Price Raise in Less Than Two Years
You’re probably experiencing déjà vu at the moment, as you could have sworn coming across articles recently about a Netflix price hike.
That was back in January 2020, when COVID-19 was the Wuhan virus and watching shows on Netflix was still a hobby, not a full-time profession.
At that time, prices were raised by similar increments for all three plans: $1 for the basic plan, $2 for the standard, and $3 for the premium.
Back then, Mr Leigh Wong, Netflix’s head of communications for South-east Asia said the extra cash will help fund technology improvements.
Alternatives
As someone who loves streaming services but hates spending money, I’m always looking for cheaper alternatives.
If you’re thinking of switching streaming services, here are four alternatives you could look at:
- Disney Plus – $11.99 a month/$119.99 a year
- Amazon Prime Video – $2.99 a month
- HBO Go – $13.98 a month / $119.98 a year
- Apple TV+ – Free with device / $6.98 a month
