Previously, we pointed out to New Zealand as a possible future for Singapore when they claimed that they’ve won against Covid-19 after their one-month lockdown.

Did our predictions come true? Were they worthy role models?

Turns out, they might be.

New Zealand Now Has No New COVID-19 Cases & All Patients Have Recovered; Country Set to Lift All Restrictions

On 8 June 2020, it was reported that New Zealand’s last Covid-19 patients have recovered from the coronavirus.

With this, they have successfully managed to eradicate Covid-19 from their shores, even though that wasn’t what they’ve set out to do in the first place.

They are the first country to do so with a sizeable outbreak.

Happens Just Hours Before Almost All Restrictions Are Lifted

This development came just hours before New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is expected to announce a total lifting of the remaining restrictions within the country on businesses and its people.

Strict border restrictions, however, will remain.

New Zealand’s tourism sector, which was the nation’s greatest source of foreign exchange earnings, has taken a huge hit.

The impact is expected to continue until a vaccine is found.

New Zealand has been criticised as being too “stringent” in its lockdown measures when their neighbouring country, Australia, seemingly achieved the same results with less stringent measures.

However, it seems that their efforts might pay off as the country could become a more desirable destination for foreign students.

Constant Vigilance

Moody from the Harry Potter series would’ve loved the country.

Despite the good news, New Zealand isn’t letting its guard up at all.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said that:

“Having no active cases for the first time since February 28 is certainly a significant mark in our journey but as we’ve previously said, ongoing vigilance against Covid-19 will continue to be essential.”

They are only considering it a successful elimination if there are “28 days of no new cases after the last person to have contracted the virus via community transmission left quarantine”.

Currently, the country has passed 17 days with no new Covid-19 cases and this milestone will be reached on 15 June 2020 if everything goes smoothly.

I mean, are you really surprised, considering that this is the country that turned its own prime minister away from a restaurant because it would breach safe distancing.
