Those who often head to town will probably know of the big open-air carpark at Grange Road just opposite Cineleisure Orchard.
To many of those who drive, you will probably love this carpark because it offers cheaper parking rates of $1.30/30 minutes than any other carparks in town, though finding a lot there is as difficult as finding an influencer who doesn’t travel every few months.
Sadly, it will be ceasing its operations at the end of February 2020 and will be converted permanently into an event space.
Conversion Into Event Space
The open-air carpark was previously used as an event space, and they even hosted the BMW Fest last month.
They will also be hosting the Great Christmas Village, which is part of Orchard Road’s Christmas light up this year.
According to the Singapore Land Authority, we can look forward to seeing more flea markets, pop-up attractions, local entertainment and food trucks after February next year.
They also added that on days where there are no events, the space will be converted to a public area with “greenery and interesting street furniture”.
Yah, furniture instead of cars.
Netizens React To The Conversion
Many netizens took to CNA‘s Facebook post to express their dismay and concern over whether there will be more parking spaces made available in town since there are very limited places to park.
One netizen expressed how he was going to be “super sad” since it was the only place he parked at.
Another netizen said that parking rates at other carparks were bound to cost “a plate of chicken rice every hour”. Another also complained that there was no longer going to be any cheap parking.
One other netizen commented that it was fine to convert this carpark into an event space, but asked if more parking spaces would be made available.
Another netizen resigned to his fate and decided that the best way to escape from all this is to simply take MRT to town in the future.
Makes sense.
Alternatives?
Well, there’s still some time before the Grange Road carpark gets converted into an event space, so enjoy cheap parking while it lasts.
In the meantime, you should probably look for alternatives. Otherwise, when February next year rolls around, you can always choose the cheapest option – take the MRT.
But seriously, can people really find a lot there?
