On 12 Aug 2025, train services between Farrer Park and Punggol Coast stations came to a complete halt due to a power fault. SBS Transit announced the service disruption on its social media accounts.
NEL Power Fault Disrupts Train Operations Across 11 Stations
The affected stretch includes 11 stations along the NEL route. Free regular and bridging bus services became available between Dhoby Ghaut and Punggol Coast stations to accommodate stranded passengers.
Over on Reddit, a user reported a power trip at Serangoon MRT station.
Another Netizen commented that they were on the train to Punggol Coast when they heard a crack sound.
The train then stalled for around 30 seconds, and there was an apparent smoky smell onboard.
Extended Impact: Sengkang-Punggol LRT Service Also Unavailable
The power fault extended beyond the NEL to affect connected services. SBS Transit confirmed on X that Sengkang-Punggol LRT service was also unavailable.
CNA reporters observed the situation at Boon Keng Station at about 11:20am. A security guard on ground level informed passengers that no trains were running at that moment. The security guard actively stopped people from entering the station.
Despite the service disruption, no announcements were made to waiting passengers on the platform. A stationary train remained on the side headed towards Punggol Coast for about five minutes during the observation period.
