North Korea Threatens with Nuclear Weapons Should South Korea Attack

Kim Yo Jung, deputy director of North Korea’s publicity and information department, has declared that any attempt at invasion from South Korea will be met with nuclear retaliation.

With the new change in leadership in South Korea, former president Moon Jae-in’s efforts to neutralise tensions between the North and South through a method of engagement has been turned on its head.

Ever since the conservative government’s election, South Korea has clearly shown its hawkish stance.

So, what happened?

The Spark to the Blaze

Last month, North Korea launched their first inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) since 2017.

Yoon Seok-youl, slated to become the president of South Korea in May, made comments on “pre-emptive strikes” being necessary to counter North Korea’s hypersonic missiles, and how a more muscular approach will be needed in North-South interactions.

Suh Wook, South Korea’s defence minister, added to Yoon’s remarks, explicitly stating that South Korea’s newly developed missiles had “the ability to accurately and quickly hit any target in North Korea.”

Kim Yo Jong, also Kim Jong Un’s younger sister, has responded to these threats and provocations with fury. She described what Suh said as “fantastic daydream” and the “hysteria of a lunatic”.

Nuclear Threats

In a statement published by North Korea’s state newspapers, Kim Yo Jong stated that even though North Korea did not want war, South Korea’s aggression and attacks would be met with nuclear violence.

“In case South Korea adopts military confrontation against us, our nuclear combat forces are inevitably obliged to carry out their mission,” said Ms Kim. “If the situation develops to such an extent, a terrible attack would be mounted and the South Korean army would have no other choice but to suffer the tragic lot of extermination.”

Earlier, Ms Kim denounced Suh Wook as a “reckless” and “senseless and scum-like guy”.

This threat of nuclear retaliation is her second condemnation of South Korea in 48 hours.
