A 30-year-old operationally ready National Serviceman (NSman) died on 30 Jun 2025 after collapsing outside Maju Camp.
The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) confirmed his death in a statement released on 1 Jul 2025.
The NSman had completed a National Service Fitness Improvement Training (NS FIT) session at Maju Fitness Conditioning Centre between 6.50pm and 8pm that evening.
After reporting that he felt well to the fitness instructors, he was cleared to leave the centre.
NSman Collapse and Emergency Response Outside Maju Camp
At 8.11pm, the NSman booked out of Maju Camp. He collapsed outside the camp shortly after leaving. A passer-by witnessed the collapse and immediately called for an ambulance.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force received the alert at 8.16pm. An ambulance arrived at the scene at 8.25pm.
Medical personnel initiated resuscitation efforts on-site and continued them en route to the National University Hospital.
The NSman arrived at the hospital at around 9pm. Despite emergency medical interventions, he was pronounced dead at 9.54pm.
Safety Pause on NS FIT Training After NSman Death
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has implemented a safety pause on NS FIT training until 4 Jul 2025 as a precautionary measure. The pause allows authorities to review safety procedures and protocols and remind soldiers about the importance of safety.
NS FIT is a 10-session programme that encourages NSmen to incorporate fitness and regular exercise into their lives. Since 2021, it has replaced the remedial and voluntary preparatory training aspects of the individual physical proficiency test.
“The SAF is rendering support to the family in their time of grief. We extend our deepest condolences to the family”, the statement said.
Further investigations will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
