Nursed Jailed for Punching & Kicking Wheelchair-Bound Resident in Jurong Old Folks’ Home

Being a nurse is never an easy job.

It’s also got even riskier with the COVID-19 pandemic running amok this year.

Hours can be long, and you need the mental fortitude to handle many tasks and patients.

Sometimes, no matter how unreasonable the latter might be, remaining calm in front of them is important.

Losing your cool and punching them, however, is not on the checklist.

Nursed Jailed for Punching & Kicking Wheelchair-Bound Resident in Jurong Old Folks’ Home

Flores Alvin Jay Vargas, 36, was jailed for 16 weeks on 23 Dec after he attacked a wheelchair-bound man.

Vargas, a Filipino, worked as a nurse in All Saints Home, an old folks’ home in Jurong East.

He allegedly punched and kicked the 67-year-old victim, who’s been at the home since 2017 with brain trauma following a traffic accident.

Pretty sure it’s to care for the patients, not try and kill them if you’re a nurse.

But how did all of this happen anyway?

Wanted A Knife To Cut Apple

This incident occurred on 25 May 2019.

The victim initially asked for a knife to cut an apple but had his request refused.

After throwing a tantrum and pressing the call bell non-stop, Vargas came over to explain why he couldn’t have one.

It didn’t work, and the victim carried on until a nurse aide turned the bell off, prompting the man to use another handheld bell.

When Vargas tried to take it away, the victim pulled at his shirt and tore it.

This prompted the nurse to retaliate, punching the man in his chest a few times and kicking the bed frame.

It then escalated into kicking the victim’s body.

Thankfully, the nursing aide and another employee managed to make him stop.

A prosecutor noted that Vargas even tried to ask the nursing aide to try and cover up what he did.

But of course we know how it’ll end up.

Victim Taken To Hospital

The incident was discovered two days later when the victim’s older brother visited and was told of what transpired.

He made a police report and got his brother sent to the hospital for his injuries.

Overall, there were suspected crack fractures on two ribs and the victim was hospitalised for seven days.

He eventually transferred to a community hospital for rehabilitation.

The prosecutor asked for 16 weeks of jail for abusing his position and how vulnerable the victim was. Asking the nursing aide to lie (to cover up the incident) was also brought up.

However, Vargas stated that he has deeply regretted his actions and would not break the law again.

He is also no longer working at All Saints Home.

The punishment could’ve been more severe, with up to two years of jail, a S$5,000 fine or both for voluntarily causing harm.

It could also vary depending on how much harm was done to the victim.
