Congratulations on the payout, nurses, you wholeheartedly deserve it.
On 31 July, Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung announced that more than 25,000 nurses will be receiving a special payment that 1.7 to 2.1 months of their base salary.
Nurses serving in the public healthcare clusters are eligible for the package as their retention payments, and it includes the groups National Healthcare Group, National Health System and SingHealth.
It will also encompass another 2,600 nurses working in publicly funded community care organisations.
In his Facebook post, Mr Ong first thanked the nurses for the tremendous amount of effort that they have devoted in the long and drawn-out pandemic.
It’s been three tough years for our healthcare system, and we’ve just tided over the peak of the second Omicron wave.
Secondly, the additional retention payment is being given in hopes that nurses will stay in Singapore and thereby retain our nursing talents.
This is important to Singapore as we face an ageing population, which means that demand for healthcare services will only increase as the years go by.
As such, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is fully committed to building a core nursing workforce to meet future needs by increasing the attractiveness of the nursing profession, as well as providing more local nursing training pipelines for fresh graduates and mid-career entrants.
The public healthcare sectors will be sharing more details regarding the NSP with the nursing staff in public health institutions while the Agency for Integrated Care will cover the publicly funded community care organisations.

Nurse Special Payment Packages
In case you aren’t aware, 1 August is Nurses’ Day.
In order to recognise the hard work and contribution of Singapore’s nurses, there are yearly Nurse Special Payment (NSP) packages for our wonderful nurses.
For the 2022 package specifically, it will be increased to 1.7 to 2.1 months, and it will be calculated based on the nurses’ base salary as of 1 December 2022.
This is composed of the normal NSP of 0.5 months, which will be disbursed in December 2022, as well as the enhanced NSP of between 1.2 months and 1.6 months, which will be separated equally into two tranches and then paid out in March 2023 and September 2023.
This will encourage nurses to remain in continuous service with their employing organisation.
The Ministry has also increased the base salaries of nurses in the public health sector by 5% to 14%.
The first phase occurred in July 2021, while the second phase occurred in July this year.
MOH stated that this will further ensure that Singapore will be able to attract and retain nursing staff, as well as maintain its market competitiveness.
Nurses are in short supply and yet in high demand around the world, after all.
