Death is inevitable and it will happen to all of us one day. Either us, or our loved ones if we’re unlucky. We just have to accept their passing.

But what happens if you cannot accept the death of a loved one? You threaten to set the hospital on fire. Say what? That’s extreme right? But that was what one man did.

In Baoji’s Central Hospital, a nurse was splashed with gasoline by a man who is the relative of a deceased woman. She was said to be in the lift and was on her way to get some medicine when the man had threw her to the ground and poured gasoline over her. Then, he threatened to set her and the hospital on fire.

The nurse, Li Ming, screamed for help when the lift doors opened at the third floor. Trying to get her to stop shouting, he started beating on her head.

Nurses and visitors nearby were attracted by the commotion and rushed forward to offer their assistance. Thankfully, before the man could set anything on fire, he was pinned to the ground by the crowd. It was believed that the nurse did not suffer serious injuries.

Investigations revealed that the man has lost his mother at the hospital. She was sent in on 14 February but she escaped on 16 February despite family members and hospital staff keeping an eye on her. A month later, her dead body was found near a river and she was said to have slit her own wrists.

To say that the family were upset is an understatement. The family demanded for compensation, and when the hospital suggest that the case be brought into the courtroom, they decide to take matters into their own hands. If the man had succeeded in accomplishing what he set out to do, he’d have killed over 1,000 patients, staff and visitors.

After repeated incidents like this, not only are doctors in China required to have training in their specific field of medicine, they are trained in self-defense as well.
