NUS Lecturer Only knew That He Was on Mute for the Entire Lecture After the Lecture Ended

We have the Covid-19 pandemic to blame for a lot of things, such as the lack of leisure travel and large parties.

But there’s one upshot of Covid-19 that some students may actually like: online classes.

After all, you don’t have to wake up too early to make the long journey to school. You can also dress in the clothes you woke up in, provided no one can see you.

But because the lecturer can’t see you, he won’t know if you’re actually listening or if you’re watching videos of a cat doing a puzzle.

Or worse, he won’t know if you can hear him.

NUS Lecturer Only knew That He Was on Mute for the Entire Lecture After 2 Hours

On 4 Feb, YouTube channel Singapore Incidents uploaded a video showing the reaction of an NUS lecturer who only discovered he was muted for his entire 2-hour lecture at the end.

For those who don’t know, when school lessons are conducted online, the lecturer usually mutes his participants, to prevent disruptions.

Also, the students are usually told to turn their videos off, meaning the lecturer can’t see or hear them.

So, if there happens to be a tarantula on the lecturer’s head, none of his students would be able to tell him.

In this case, the lecturer, surnamed Wang, unknowingly muted himself at the beginning of his lecture.

His lecture seems to have started at around 6pm, and ended at 8pm.

It was only when his lecture ended and he unmuted his students that he discovered his grave mistake.

At the end of his lecture, Mr Wang asked his class if they had any questions.

Silence descended on the virtual classroom for a good 10 seconds, prompting the lecturer to repeat his question.

“Do you have any questions?”, he asked.

And then, he heard this:

Naturally, the lecturer couldn’t believe what he just heard.

When the student repeated the time from which he muted himself – 6.08pm – the lecturer seemed incredulous.

So, just to make sure, he asked his students a third time how long they were able to hear his lecture.

The students replied that they only heard him for the first few minutes, after which his screen froze and they heard nothing for the entire 2-hour lecture.

Mr Wang then starts panicking, but soon comes to terms with what happened.

He tells the class he’ll have to redo the lecture at another time.

Student Explains What Happened

One netizen who claims to be a student shared an explanation of what happened in the comments section of the video:

Whatever the explanation, we certainly feel for the lecturer.

When giving a lecture online, it’d be a good idea to keep your phone close in case of emergencies like this.

Otherwise, you might end up giving a lecture to yourself for two hours.
