NUS Report States There Are 8 Complaints of Sexual Misconduct in First Half of 2023

National University of Singapore (NUS) has been taking complaints about sexual misconduct seriously, and for good reason.

Between 1 Jan and 30 Jun 2023, the school has received eight complaints of sexual misconduct.

Police reports were lodged for all cases.

Three Sexual Assault With One Expulsion

In its half-yearly report, NUS reported that there were eight complaints of sexual misconduct received by the school.

The earliest complaint was received on 25 Jan 2023. A student was accused of raping a member of the public outside school grounds.

However, the school did not take further actions against the student due to a lack of evidence.

On 31 Jan 2023, the school received another complaint, this time involving students on campus ground.

A student had allegedly raped another student at the hostel. A no-contact order was issued immediately and the student was expelled from the school with immediate effect.

An appeal is currently being made against the decision.

The third sexual assault is currently under investigation and a no-contact order was given. The student had allegedly tried to rape another student off-campus.

Intimate photos and videos of the victim was also kept without consent.

Threatening to Distribute Intimate Encounters

Another complaint involved the same student who had allegedly filmed the sexual encounters with others without permission.

The student then allegedly threatened to distribute the footage.

A no-contact order was issued for this case.

Molestation

On 13 Feb 2023, a student had allegedly touched another student inappropriately without consent while off-campus.

The student was suspended for two semesters and barred from school grounds for the duration of the suspension.

The student will also not be allowed to stay in on-campus housing anymore and was given 120 hours of community-based sanctions and compulsory counselling.

Another molestation complaint received in Feb 2023 is still under investigation.

Sharing Intimate Pictures

In May 2023, the school received a complaint that a student had shared intimate pictures of the victim, a non-school member, online without permission.

The student was suspended for four months, and was not allowed on premises for the duration of the suspension. The student was also not allowed to stay from on-campus housing for his remaining years of study.

The student also received 120 hours of community-based sanctions and mandated counselling.

One Staff Member Involved

A staff member of the school was also involved in one complaint.

The staff had allegedly molested a member of the public a few years ago.

Investigations into the case completed in May 2023 and the school did not take further action as a case could not be established due to a lack of evidence and facts.

The staff member has no teaching duties and had a purely administrative role.

Back in 2021, NUS required its staff members and students to complete an online module to cultivate respect and consent.

It was reported that more students were coming forward to lodge complaints against perpetrators.
