Whenever we think of the weather at our sunny island, the answer is always: hot, hotter or hottest. Words like, “cooling” or “breezy” seldom appear in our dictionary as we lament about the high temperature over here in Singapore.
Well, the good news is that more thundery showers are expected during the first two weeks of October.
What’s even better is that the daily temperature for these two weeks is expected to range between 24°C and 33°C on most days.
While on some days, it may reach to a low of around 22°C.
That’s like having the whole of Singapore on air-con mode.
Moderate to Heavy Thundery Showers Expected on Some Days During the First Two Weeks of October
According to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), short durations of moderate to heavy thundery showers between the late morning and afternoon during some days can be expected.
These showers could continue into the evening over some parts of Singapore.
So it means you can still dry your clothes; just be prepared to keep them when rain comes on some days.
Now comes the science part which explains why rain is forecasted during some days in October.
That’s because the monsoon rain band is expected to lie closer to the equatorial Southeast Asia region, meaning more rain can be expected.
During the second week of October, moderate to heavy thundery showers with occasional gusty winds between predawn and morning on several days are expected.
On some nights, there might be thundery showers too.
According to MSS, this is due to the strong convergence of winds in the surrounding vicinity and the passage of Sumatra squalls.
October’s rainfall for the first two weeks is forecasted to be above average over most parts of Singapore.
Second Wettest September in the Last 10 Years
If you also felt that there were some rather cooling days last month too, that’s because September 2020 was the second wettest September in the last 10 years.
The monthly total rainfall for September was 150.2mm.
The wettest month ever in Singapore was in September 2013, where the monthly total rainfall was 257mm.
Last month was also the coolest September in the last 10 years, which coincided with the temperature recorded in September 2013, where the monthly mean temperature was 27.5°C.
The lowest daily minimum temperature last month was 20.9°C, recorded at Newton on 16 September.
The low temperature was associated with a Sumatra squall which brought heavy thundery showers and gusty winds over the island in the early hours of the morning.
