Ok, so our first S’pore Idol is going to be a movie star soon

Remember Taufik Batisah? 12 years ago, the then-22-year-old charmed us with his devastating good looks and amazing vocals on Singapore Idol. Now, he’s getting his second big break – as a movie star.

Taufik scored the lead role on the upcoming Malaysian drama-comedy, Dukun Doktor Dani. Having to act alongside popular Malaysian actresses Fasha Sandha and Khatijah Tan was “pressurising” for the 34-year-old, but he said it “was something [he] wanted to do”.

The film is slated to open in cinemas around Kuala Lumpur on July 28. There are no plans for a Singapore release right now.

Even though he might not have much acting experience (he only previously starred in local productions Demi Adriana and Shooting Stars), Taufik said his personal life helped his on-set performance.

“Doktor Dani is quite a Mummy’s boy and, in real life, so am I,” Taufik told lollipop.sg.

He added that acting was a lot harder for him than singing.

“Perhaps, after all these years, singing has become second nature to me, but acting doesn’t come so naturally and I know I’ve got a lot to learn,” he said.

After winning Singapore Idol in 2004, Taufik is no stranger to the spotlight – and no stranger to criticism. He said that the past 12 years in the music business has prepared him well, and is ready for anything that’s thrown his way.

“I like acting and I certainly hope it is something that I can do seriously, for sure.”
