Okay, these cheese fries have more cheese than fries. I can’t even…

We might have a certain Colonel to thank for bringing cheese fries into the spotlight in Singapore, but there is much more than simply dressing French fries with a cheese sauce. Go big or go home, I say; why stop there? And it seems that these restaurants agree with me, because their cheese fries have so much more than cheese that I don’t even know where to start. Get in ma belly!

Boufe @ Tanglin Road
You know people are serious about their cheese fries when they make a video with sexy music exclusively for it. After frying their shoestring fries (which is exactly how I like my fries; I’m not a thick-cut person), they dress it with their spice mix before ladling a huge heap of beef chilli on top. The whole thing then gets drenched in a layer of thick, gooey, creamy cheese then topped with some spring onion and a sprinkling of their dry spice. It might be slightly out of the way, but I don’t mind the exercise up and down since I will have a ton of calories to burn after I down their chilli cheese fries anyway.

Loof @ Odeon Towers
Here’s one for the CBD crowd. Nothing is better than kicking back and relaxing on a rooftop in the heart of Singapore after a hard day’s work at the office with a drink, some friends and…chilli crab cheese fries. Instead of the usual meat chilli, the folks at Loof have put together a cheese fries with a local touch, by using chilli crab chilli sauce instead. If you cannot imagine how it can possibly taste good together with cheese, I suggest you give it a shot before you say anything more. It will shut you up.

Potato Head Folk @ Keong Saik
Quickly emerging from its sleazy past to become the next hippie and foodie destination of Singapore, Keong Saik Road is home to another eatery that unapologetically tells you what they like best. And here, they have a pumped-up, steroid-driven Naughty Fries that is spiked with parmesan, fried shallots (!) and sesame seeds (?!) in addition to the usual beef chilli that will absolutely sing in your mouth…or perhaps scream.

36 Keong Saik Rd, Singapore 089143 (Tue to Sun, 11 am – 12 am)

Cook and Brew @ Asia Square Tower 2
You could say that the original cheese fries originated where we’re going to take you to next – Canada. Poutine is a dish made out of French fries topped with cheese and a meat gravy, so it is probably the original form of what we know of chilli cheese fries today. With that, you’ve got to try the Canadian Poutine at Cook and Brew, which has more than just a meat gravy – it has tender pulled pork all over it as well.
