Old Chang Kee Chilli Crab ‘O’ Review: The Best Crab You’d Get For Just $2.20

I‘ll admit it. When my boss told me to try this Chilli Crab ‘O’ that Old Chang Kee is selling for National Day, I was a little bit worried.

I mean, after all the new food that brands tried to come up with recently (and failed badly), you’d be worried too.

Like McDonald’s Ha Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Burger

Or Their Breakfast Curry Burger

Yup, you get why I’m worried.

But then again, this is Old Chang Kee we’re talking about.

You know, the brand that believes in staff welfare and authenticity before anything else (or so I’m told).

So I bravely looked my boss in the eye and said…

And I lost.

So I was stuck with this.

How does it look?

To be honest, the chilli crab ‘O’ itself doesn’t look really bad.

In fact, it’s the opposite. It looks damn good.

And that’s an understatement.

Although you have to admit that the fiery red the puff comes in does look very intimidating. Almost like nature’s way of telling you, DANGER, BACK OFF. NOW.

But seeing how online reviews are raving about these delicious bits of crabs, I knew I have to give it a go.

Plus, my boss’s watching me from his office, ready to fire me at any moment.

So I took a bite.

Chilli Crab ‘O’, A History in the Making

Mind. Blown.

I rarely rave about food. In fact, if you were to check past food reviews, I’m far more likely to hate on them then rave about it.

But this, this is just too good not to talk about.

Imagine piping hot crunchy skin, with spicy, sweet and salty chilli crab within. And the taste of crab roe and meat perfectly balances out the taste.

Now bite into it, and the chilli crab practically flows into your mouth.

That’s what heaven felt like to me. That first bite.

And don’t get me wrong, this ain’t no fake crabmeat. The smell and taste of the filling just scream of the real thing.

Although I wish their crab meat could come in bigger pieces.

In fact, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that this combination of puff and chilli crab is only second to the mantou and chilli crab combination.

Now that, no one can beat. But this came damn close.

So, would I recommend this to you?

Hell, yeah! Go get it now. In fact, get as many as possible because once more people know about the taste of their Chilli Crab puff? It’s going to get sold out.

Possibly even before the day it’s supposed to stop selling.

So like my colleague would tell you, better fast hand fast leg, yeah?

On a separate note, we didn’t get to try Old Chang Kee’s nasi lemak that’s supposed to be as hot, if not hotter, than the Chilli Crab ‘O’.

If you managed to try it, feel free to let us know what you think about their food items on the menu.

One thing’s for sure, they’ve done something that no other brands seemed to have done for this year’s National Day.

Making good food that represents Singaporean.

Agree?

And don’t say we bojio, now they’re selling the Chilli Crab ‘O’ at $2.20 per piece, but if you buy two, it’s going for $4.

(Editor’s note: A previous version of this article priced the Chilli Crab ‘O’ at $1.50 per piece, which is inaccurate. The writer has been sent to eat 25 Chilli Crab ‘O’ before the day ends, with his own money. *smirks*)

Now you know what Singaporeans are talking about today; do check back tomorrow for another piece of news of the day!
