We all like to travel back in time, but not this way.
On 4 August 2023, this image went viral on Facebook:
A look at the comment section revealed numerous comments condemning the actions of the household, with some urging the authorities to take action against them.
What they didn’t realise is that while we can travel back in time with the internet, we can’t do so in real life.
People Are Complaining About This Image That Is Actually an Old Image
This didn’t take place in 2023.
Instead, it took place in 2015, and then on 2017 again.
Apparently, the image has first surfaced in Stomp in 2015:
No respect: Resident hangs underwear over national flag http://t.co/45Cb5uE5Tk pic.twitter.com/fx4fejDQXJ
— Stomp Singapore (@stompsingapore) August 5, 2015
Then, in 2017, it was reshared on social media again as if it happened on that year.
Despite that, it’s revealed that the person who shared the image this year has also reported the incident to the town council, although we wonder how it can be done.
Interestingly enough, there wasn’t many people who realised that it was an old image, too, with many people just jumping on the bandwagon to slam the household.
Or maybe it’s not an old image, and that someone simply just has the exact same underwear placed at the exact same position?
Penalty For Misuse of Flag Increased
There is, however, a difference if the complaint happened in 2015 instead of 2023.
From 1 August 2023, the previous Singapore Arms and Flag and National Anthem (SAFNA) Act and Rules were replaced with the National Symbols Act (“the Act”) and its Regulations.
If the household is charged in 2015, they’d face a maximum fine of $1,000.
Under the new rules, if they’re charged now, they might face up to $30,000 fine and / or six months’ jail.
