S’pore’s Oldest COVID-19 Patient Fully Recovered & Discharged from Hospital

Today’s a good day. At least, in terms of COVID-19 news.

Other than having the lowest number of local COVID-19 cases since the Circuit Breaker started, Singapore’s oldest COVID-19 patient, 102-year-old Mdm Yap Lay Hong, has fully recovered and is now discharged today.

Mdm Yap is 1 of the 16 residents at the Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home who was tested positive last month.

The Facebook Page of Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home has just announced the good news and it wasn’t just her who had been discharged but several others, too:

We are back!

Today is a day of happiness as we welcome home our residents who fought hard to recover and overcome the COVID-19 virus. They were discharged from the hospitals and are now resting well at the Home. We thank the heroic and selfless efforts of our frontline healthcare colleagues who nursed them back to health.

The welfare of our residents continues to be our top priority and is what keeps us going. Everyday is another day for optimism and hope for our community and country. Together, we will fight on!

According to The Straits Times, only one resident remains in the hospital: a 96-year-old female resident. However, her condition is stable.

Mdm Yap has 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Her son has said that Mdm Yap has always been in great health despite her age: at 102, she even took daily walks.

He added, “Her story shines a light of hope in all of us overcoming this battle as a nation and community.”

Two Residents of Ah Mooi Old Age Home Passed Away

The virus has, however, taken the lives of two Lee Ah Mooi Old Age—both 86.

In Singapore, 15 people have died due to COVID-19 infection, with the youngest being 58 years old.

The authorities have mentioned that they would be ramping up testing nursing homes, for both its residents and the staff members.

But why, you ask.

Over in Sweden, the country that has openly implemented a herd immunity strategy whereby they allow the coronavirus to spread freely so as to let the population build an immunity to it, 1 in 3 deaths takes place in care facilities for the elderly.

And lest you didn’t know, the fatality rate for older people is much higher than people who are younger:

In any case, Mdm Yap has shown that if you lead a healthy lifestyle, anything is possible.
