With the rise of e-commerce platforms, there’s no doubt that scams have become increasingly frequent as well.
As such, different measures to protect buyers, such as opting for Cash on Delivery and ensuring that you only purchase items from reputable sellers, have become pretty standard.
However, despite these measures, some individuals still end up getting scammed.
Like this 65-year-old woman who bought dentures online…
But end up receiving toy ones.
And no, she wasn’t buying them as toys for her grandchildren.
Bought the Dentures from Facebook as They Were Cheap
When speaking to Shin Min Daily News about her experience, the victim, Luo Tailan (Hanyu pinyin), recalled how she saw someone selling dentures on Facebook.
The prices were relatively cheap, and there was even a ‘buy three get three free’ offer, which made the dentures attractive in terms of price.
According to the advertisement videos that Ms Luo watched, there was also a promotion which included receiving free lower dentures for every upper denture purchased.
This made Ms Luo feel that the dentures were a good deal.
After browsing through the relevant posts, Ms Luo decided to purchase six sets of dentures.
In total, she spent $65.
Paid for Cash on Delivery Without Checking the Contents Inside the Parcel
After making her purchase, Ms Luo was instructed to leave a comment with her name and address, presumably on Facebook.
She received the parcel around two weeks after ordering the dentures.
Upon receiving the parcel, she paid the deliveryman as the parcel was a cash-on-delivery one.
Even though the payment method for the dentures was cash on delivery, she paid the deliveryman without checking the contents of the parcel first.
She only realised that she had been scammed after opening the parcel afterwards and tried to contact the seller with her complaint.
However, the seller became uncontactable.

Average Cost of Dentures in Singapore
And if you’re wondering how much dentures cost on average, you might be able to see why Ms Luo got scammed.
On average, dentures cost around $610 to $800 per arch, but the price can vary greatly depending on the establishment you visit.
Dentures are also specially curated and highly personalised for every person’s mouth, which can contribute to the cost as well.
Of course, that also means that you probably shouldn’t buy dentures online unless you want teeth with proportions that make you look like you’re at a Halloween party.
