Often the times, otters are cute and cuddly. Just lovable creatures that bask about the jarring humidity of sunny Singapore – unlike you and I.
Very much like me, you have been stuck at home to dwell about the lingering sting of your long-gone graduation plans. Very un-otter-like, if you were to ask me.
What were we talking about? Right, otters!
I am terrified of otters and their tendencies to ravage private fish ponds. The image of half-eaten bits of fish carcass just doesn’t mix well with me.
Unfortunately, the latter was something that former Singaporean actress, Jazreel Low, has had to deal with: the entire package of a fishpond massacre.
Prized Fishes Killed By Otters
The 54-year-old former actress turned entrepreneur took it up to Facebook to speak about the unfortunate incident.
On Monday, she posted a few snaps of the crime scene on her personal Facebook page.
While one image showed the runaway culprits, another showed an empty pond.
According to Ms Low, the following had taken place at her spa, Aramsa Spa.
On a separate post on the same Facebook page, Ms Low paid tribute to her beloved 13-year-old arrowana, Ah Huat. Unfortunately, Ah Huat was one of the few victims who had perished during the otter attack.
Netizens Express Condolences… and Differing Views Towards Otters
While some simply extended their condolences to Ms Low, others argued on the role that otters played in Singapore’s context.
After all, not everybody can be bought over by their overwhelming cuteness. Turns out Ms Low’s pond is just one of the many otter hotspots in the country.
Some even gave her suggestions on how to revamp her fish pond. But I guess things will just never be the same without the departed Ah Huat.

Ms Low’s response to a comment made by celebrity, Hossan Long, suggests that the tenacious arrowana had survived prior misfortunes such as floods and draught. Tragic how it didn’t make through an attack by some cute fellows.
Are Otters Pests?
There’s only one way to find out.
My investigative streak has taken me to the magical realm of Quora and Reddit, the only top-notch sources for your everyday questions.
According to a certain Viola Yee from Quora, it depends. That was not very helpful, Viola. Maybe you shouldn’t be on Quora.
But seriously, it really depends. Are durians nice? It depends, too.
If you are curious to find out more about the OTTER SIDE of Singapore, you can head on down to OtterWatch’s Facebook page. They’ve got it all covered from A to Z. They’ve even got Zoom sessions! How cool is that?
With the amount of free time that you probably have, why not learn more about these creatures and how we can co-exist with them.
