Everything About the PAP MP’s Article That Has Caused a Hoo-Ha Online Simplified for You

Despite what President Trump believes, politicians have a responsibility to speak carefully because every single action and word is scrutinised carefully, and possibly acted upon.

I mean, my handsome colleague even love guessing the type of news our ministers give based on what they wear:

So when PAP MP Tan Wu Meng wrote an article titled “Mr Pritam Singh supports Alfian Sa’at”, you can be sure that it’s going to be scrutinised really carefully.

Especially when said article was posted on the official PAP platform, seemingly indicating that the party supports his viewpoint.

“Supporting The Wrong Person”

As an introduction, Tan said that during the Budget Debate on 5 June, Mr Pritam Singh spoke out in support of Alfian Sa’at.

Alfian Sa’at is a Singaporean playwright and poet who has a habit of speaking out against the ruling party.

Mr Singh had then said during the debate that Singapore is “fortunate” that it has citizens who are “loving critics among us”.

While Mr Singh did not name anyone when he spoke, Mr Tan said that it was “clear that he was referring to Sa’at”.

The problem here wasn’t that Singapore has no ‘loving critics’.

It has, according to Mr Tan Wu Meng, who named opposition politicians like Mr Low Thia Kiang and Mr Chiam See Tong.

Instead, he asserts that Sa’at was no “loving critic” and has expressed his love for Malaysia to “show disdain for Singapore”.

Here are two examples he cited in his article:

During this time, Mr Tan says Malaysia has sent vessels over to intrude in Singapore’s waters.

“Barely 2 Years After Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s Death”

To end off his article, Mr Tan calls on Mr Singh to go through Alfian Sa’at’s Facebook posts in detail and let “them” know again if he still thinks Sa’at is a “loving critic”.

If he still thinks so, he questioned if Mr Singh himself is a “loving critic”.

Responses To His Article:

Pritam only has a two-liner for Mr Tan:

Meanwhile, Alfian Sa’at wrote a lengthy response to Tan’s article, saying that the party should’ve gone after an opposition party’s manifesto instead of using a “nobody” to attack an opposition MP.

“I think it’s just bad form to attack me as a way of attacking a member of an Opposition Party.”

He added that over the years, while he has written statements to support Malaysia, he did it as a challenge to “anti-Malaysian Singaporeans, where any praise of Malaysia is seen as provocative to their worldview”.

He added that he was equally critical of Malaysia in his other literary works.

He asked for the ruling party to focus on “bigger things” in the election this time instead of focusing their time and energy on him:

“In the grand scheme of things, I’m really a nobody. And by dragging me into this, you’re risking coming down to my level to become another nobody, discussing things of very little consequence to these elections.”

Well, all in all, I think the upcoming GE this time is going to get really heated up.
