A married couple died when their car collided head-on with a lorry along Jalan Kuantan-Segamat on 17 Jun 2025.
The crash occurred at around 10pm near Kampung Batu Lapan, Lepar, in Pekan district. Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, was driving a Proton Wira with his wife Lizawati Abdullah, 41, and their three children, aged between six and 17.

The family from Felda Chini Timur 1, Pahang, was travelling from Kuantan towards Segamat when tragedy struck.

Jamal had attempted to overtake another vehicle along the two-way stretch at Batu 8, Lepar. The car is believed to have lost control during the overtaking manoeuvre.
The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into an oncoming Mitsubishi Fuso lorry.
Both Jamal and Lizawati died at the scene from serious injuries. Their bodies were sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan for post-mortem examination.
Three Children Hospitalised with Serious Injuries After Parents’ Death
The couple’s three children sustained injuries to their head, face, and abdomen in the crash. All three were rushed to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for treatment.
The lorry driver, Logesvaran Kandan, 31, escaped unhurt in the collision. His two passengers, aged 24 and 37, sustained only minor injuries.
Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin confirmed the crash details in an official statement. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police also revealed that the lorry driver did not have a driving licence.
