Being a food delivery rider is no easy task. You often have to ride under the scorching sun all day and deal with unruly difficult customers, as well as delayed orders. We know because one of us has been one before; watch this video to the end and you’d understand:
These guys are making an honest living, and all of us respect that. Or rather, most of us respect that.
On 7 Nov, Malaysian property agent Paul Lim and entrepreneurship educator Maggie Fong conducted a live stream on Facebook. Lim held it with the intention of improving his business, but he ended up enraging hordes of netizens.
The duo had belittled workers in the gig economy, including private-hire drivers and food delivery workers, sparking outrage in the comments section.
One example of their unkind comments came from Fong: “Only parasites drive Grab; they have no culture”.
Wow.
You can’t find the video on Facebook, but go to TikTok and you’d probably see it at least once because many people have posted the offensive parts on the video platform.
The property agent has already made the obligatory teary-eyed apology, but now, he’s going one step further.
Property Agent Said He’ll be a Food Delivery Rider After He Was Slammed for Looking Down on Them
In a press conference yesterday (12 November), Lim once again apologised for his comments, saying it was never his intention to mock anyone, as he merely aimed to sell land in Balik Pulau through the livestream.
“There is a lot of talk about the incident and about me on social media,” he said. “I hope the public can forgive me.”
To show netizens how sorry he is, Lim said he become a food delivery rider to experience the work for himself.
“Again, I want to apologise to all e-hailing drivers, food delivery riders, fishmongers and hawkers,” he said.
“I will respect everybody’s occupation.”
Suspended By Company
The 28-year-old said he wants to become a better person before resuming his work as a property agent, but this may not have been his choice.
His company has reportedly suspended him indefinitely from all the jobs he was working on.
The Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents has also weighed in on the issue, saying it was disturbed by the comments Lim and Fong made.
“We wish to state that Lim’s remarks are his own and we do not agree with or support them,” its CEO K. Soma Sundram said. He added that Lim’s views do not reflect how property agents view food delivery riders and private-hire drivers.
“Without them our lives will be in turmoil,” Mr Sundram said.
Fong has since apologised as well in an interview with a Chinese-language news site.
In the press conference, Lim said that Fong was actually a client, and that he had no prior relationship with her.
Earlier, Lim had shared a teary apology on his Facebook page, pleading with netizens not to target his company or family members.
