Johor Gov Wants to Build a Pedestrian Walkway on the Causeway

We’ve all heard of people walking across the causeway link between Singapore and Malaysia, but most times, it’s because they had no other choice.

But what if I were to tell you that in the near future, you might be able to walk all the way from the Singapore checkpoint at Woodlands to JB City Square Mall, and you can do it in comfort?

Yes, my dear readers, like my fellow writer, BuffLord95, said, nothing’s impossible except understanding what your girlfriend means when she says whatever.

Johor Gov Wants to Build a Pedestrian Walkway on the Causeway

The idea of a covered walkway allowing people to walk from JB to Singapore was brought up a year ago in September 2019.

Then, it was proposed that a 3-storey walkway can be built on the Causeway, allowing pedestrians to walk across the Causeway in relative comfort.

This idea was met with more thumbs up than a NAS Daily video and many felt that it would make it safer for avid walkers who want to avoid the congested roads during the pre-Covid-19 days.

It would also help to reduce congestion on the road since people have an additional option for transit.

Budget Doubled A Year Later

Originally, the budget for the project was RM15 million.

However, a year later, the Johor government revealed that they’ve submitted the proposal earlier this year, asking for funding of RM30 million instead.

The reason for the increase, according to State Public Works, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri, is because they redesigned the proposed pedestrian walkway.

The newly redesigned walkway will have air-conditioning and escalators.

The walkway is expected to span 350 metres long and end at Singapore’s border, he added.

Wait, so only half the Causeway Link?

Worry not, young ‘un, because the Malaysian chairman has more to add.

Singapore Also Interested In The Idea

The chairman also said that the Singapore government is interested in the idea of the walkway.

In a media briefing, Solihan revealed that officials from the Singapore Consulate had expressed interest in the proposed walkway.

They had allegedly asked more about the design of the proposed project and will be submitting a proposal to the Singapore government, seeking to extend the walkway on our side of the Causeway.

After all, they’re concerned about pedestrian safety too.

Currently, the project is waiting for the green light to proceed, and the chairman assures that they will get started as soon as the approval comes in.

Which, you got to admit, is the best time ever since there’s practically no vehicles using the Causeway Link at the moment.
