People Living in HDB Can Now Adopt Sniffer Dogs That Have ‘ORD-ed’

Sniffer dogs are man’s best friends. Literally. Because they might save your life.

They’re trained to sniff out illegal substances, explosives and all other sorts of miraculous stuff that’ll end your life in an unpleasant way.

And now, you might have a chance to repay them for their good services.

Okay, before we get into the meaty details, let me tempt you with the pictures of a few cute dogs.

And of course, our office dog.

He can smell food better than most people, but rumours have it that he eats cats. Does anyone read this?

Don’t they just look so adorable?

Adoption of Sniffer Dogs Now Open To Public

Previously on Project ADORE, dog handlers from the K-9 units and the Military Working Dog Unit (MWDU) were allowed to adopt retired sniffer dogs from their organisations.

And not just any dog handlers.

These people are staying in HDB flats, which, if you recall, restricts the size of dogs that are allowed to stay in HDB flats.

And sniffer dogs are pretty big.

Basically, if you’re a dog handler who stayed in HDB, you can adopt those big dogs. Previously, only dog handlers who stayed in private property can adopt them.

Back then, the Ministry of National Development (MND) said that they’ll review the outcome of the pilot after one year.

Why?

Because now, not just dog handlers but members of the public can adopt these awesome sniffer dogs.

Starting tomorrow (15 Aug), you can now adopt these sniffer dogs under a one-year trial basis.

Aren’t they cute?

So How Does The Process Look Like?

Now, if you’re not sure if you can commit to having a dog, we’d advise you not to apply.

The application process can be a tad bit more stringent than what you’d go through getting a normal dog.

You will be screened thoroughly and the dogs will be microchipped in case they are abandoned by their owners.

Adopters have to abide by the ownership conditions and the Code of Responsible Behaviour created by the MND.

Similar to the expansion of the scheme last year, this year’s expansion will be reviewed and assessed next year.

But of course, that’s understandable. These dogs deserve the best homes and owners after serving the nation for so long.

Terms and Conditions Apply

Now that we’ve scared you with the microchips and whatnot, here are a few terms and conditions you’ll need to know:

HDB flat owners can adopt local mixed breed dogs up to 50cm tall and 15kg under Project Adore.

Only one dog is allowed per flat and the dogs must be routinely sterilised and vaccinated.

New owners must enrol their dogs for obedience training courses and ensure their dogs are not a nuisance to neighbours.

But Here’s The Good News For Golden Retriever Owners Wannabe

Now, even if you’re not interested in getting a veteran dog, there’s a good news for you.

Especially if you, like my colleague, wants a big dog to let his grandson ride like a horse. Don’t do that please, I’m pretty sure that’s worthy of a report to SPCA.

It was observed that HDB residents do not really mind larger dogs in their neighbourhoods. As long as the dogs and owners behave appropriately and responsibly, and there are dispute mediation channels in place.

But of course lah, it’s still up to you to make sure your neighbours are accepting of larger dogs in HDB flats.

But hey, your golden retriever dreams are coming true!

Maybe. Okay, depends on how the Singaporean adopters behave this year.

Okay, we’re doomed.
