Dogs are amazing.
Not only are they cute, but they’re loyal too, and are often referred to as a “man’s best friend”.

However, not to North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un, it seems.
Kim Jong-Un Orders Confiscation of Pet Dogs
The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-Un, has ordered a ban on pets and is forcing dog owners to give up their dogs immediately.
“Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down,” said a source from South Korean newspaper Chosun Illbo.
Kim believes that pooches represent Western ‘decadence’ and that keeping dogs as pets is a ‘tainted’ trend by bourgeois ideology.

This is because only the elite in North Korea tend to keep dogs as pets since they are wealthier and can actually afford the luxury.
This practice apparently leads to social dissatisfaction, and thus Kim Jong-Un believes that everyone should just stop keeping dogs.
“Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment among the lower classes,” said the source.
Might Be Used to Feed People Due To Food Shortage
However, the underlying reason behind this ban on pet dogs could also be due to the widespread food shortage in the country.

Dog owners are fearful that their pets are going to turn up on the table of restaurants, as eating dog meat is still quite popular in countries like North Korea and China.
According to DailyMail, there are quite a number of restaurants that specialise in dog meat in the country’s capital, Pyongyang, and dog meat is in high demand during the summer months as it is believed to provide energy and stamina.
As painful as it is to think about, these poor little pets might end up as the main course in a family dinner.

According to a recent UN report, around 60% of North Korea’s population is affected by food shortage, and it has been getting worse due to international sanctions imposed on the regime for its nuclear missile programmes.
Although dog owners are upset about the situation, there seems to be nothing much that they can do to fight for their pets. They are “cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back”, but otherwise, unfortunately, their hands are tied, said the source.
