Soups be Hot Again: Crowds Appear in Supper Spots Once Phase Two Kicked In

Tick tock…

Tick tock…

Ding-ding-ding-ding (x3)

It’s 12 midnight on 19 Jun 2020.

It’s a Thursday night and you’ll expect everyone to be sleeping, or getting ready to sleep, at home, right?

Here’s what our friends over at Singapore Atrium Sale Facebook page shared:

Turns out, they’re not the only ones out and about as Todayonline went to the popular eating spots around Singapore last night.

Soups be Hot Again: Crowds Appear in Supper Spots Once Phase Two Kicked In

Here’s the exact wording my handsome colleague GY wrote about the announcement of Phase Two:

Phase One will end on 18 June 2020, 11:59pm, and from 19 June 2020, 12am, Singapore will look a tad more normal.

That’s right; Phase 2 doesn’t start from 8am on 19 Jun, it starts from midnight.

And many people decided that they had to get out and eat the moment the clock strikes 12.

Just like Cinderella, except instead of going home, they go out.

At 12mn, TODAY visited popular supper spots in Singapore to find them bustling with diners excited about eating with friends again.

Supper Club 89.7 has around 30 customers seated within 10 minutes of opening its seating area, with another 10 more waiting outside.

The same scene could be seen at eateries at Simpang Bedok.

Almost every other table were occupied with diners who looked happy.

New Mahamoodiya restaurant’s manager said that before midnight, he had received over 30 calls asking if they open after midnight.

At least 50 diners were counted eating at The Roti Prata House along Upper Thomson Road.

Not All The Same, Though

Not every place visited was crowded.

There were some eateries which were empty and one that was winding out for the day.

When asked, the operations manager of popular halal eatery Al-Azhar said that they no longer had the manpower to operate past midnight.

Most of their staff were from Malaysia, he said.

Not that you should be surprised because previously, it was reported that not every restaurant is going to be open for dine-in during Phase Two.

Some Still Aren’t Comfortable With Crowds

Just because it’s Phase Two doesn’t mean everyone is rushing out to enjoy their newfound freedom.

Just like how Wuhan residents stayed home even after the lockdown lifted, there are some in Singapore who preferred to stay on the safe side.

A 34-year-old logistics manager said:

“Just because shops are allowed to open doesn’t mean the virus suddenly disappeared overnight.”

Well, you got to admit that he makes a lot of sense.

Just because it’s Phase Two doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods.

So while we can dine out from time to time, let’s all make sure to follow all the safety measures put into place, yeah?

Things like the max cap of five people for social gathering, wearing of masks when outside and using SafeEntry everywhere you go.

As for whether Phase 2 is here to stay or not, I guess we can only tell on 29 Jun.

Why?

Because previously, experts in Singapore had said that 10 to 14 days is when we’ll see cases of people infected on 19 Jun.

So let’s all cross our fingers and hope the number of community cases doesn’t spike, yeah?
