Phone Dropped from About HDB Block When Someone Used It as a Torchlight to Sing ‘Home’

Just before 8pm yesterday, loud screams all around the neighbourhood woke you out of your Netflix coma.

You wondered if two drunk uncles were fighting or if the Euro 2020 was secretly brought forward by a year.

But then you realize that these screams were actually rather musical and sounded familiar.

Whenever I am feeling low…

Yes, Singaporeans across the country were singing Home at the top of their lungs to pay tribute to the front line and migrant workers in Singapore fighting Covid-19.

Many stood by their windows, corridors, or balcony and sang while waving their mobile phone flashlights, with some even putting up the national flag.

Residents sang along while the song was performed on television at 7.55pm by its composer Dick Lee, singers Rahimah Rahim, Shabir and Taufik Batisah, a 900-strong choir from non-profit arts group Voices of Singapore, as well as other artists.

It was a touching moment, but one person in particular ended up having a bad night.

As previously mentioned, many people were waving flashlights on their mobile phones like people with lighters used to do at concerts.

One person who was filming the block opposite from her noticed something strange during the singalong, however, as one shining light seem to drop about 20 storeys.

Unless this person was carrying a torchlight, he probably dropped his mobile phone.

We’re 99% sure it’s a phone because no one would have a torchlight at home, right?

Mobile phone shops are closed during this circuit breaker, so unless he’s using a Nokia, he’ll have to live without his phone for at least another five weeks while stuck at home.

All we can do is bow our heads and offer a minute of silence for this poor soul.

Also, if there ever is another singalong, it would be wise not to hang your expensive-ass phone over the corridor railing because it might fall or be snatched away by an eagle who really wants to play Fortnite.

At any rate, it was nice to see hoards of Singaporeans coming out to thank those who are out there every day combating the disease.

The Situation in Singapore

After several days of over 1000 new cases daily, 618 new infections were reported yesterday, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 12,693.

Of the 618 new cases, 7 are Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, and the rest are mainly work permit workers residing in dormitories.

The number of cases spread in the community has decreased from an average of 31 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 25 per day in the past week.

This means that the circuit breaker is working. Maybe singing does help.

We still have quite a way to go, though, but some of these numbers are encouraging.

For now, continue to stay at home, practise safe distancing when you go out for essential trips, and maintain good hygiene.

And remember not to hang your phone out the window for any reason. Not only will it break your heart, but it could also endanger that uncle who is still going out for Wanton Mee.
