Thanks to my mum, KitKat has played an important role in my childhood and I’m glad to announce that regardless of which part of Singapore my family relocates to, the sweet treat has been and always will be a regular in my freezer.

This is undoubtedly one family custom I’ll be passing on to the next generation whether or not my husband approves of it.

And now, a different KitKat has landed in Singapore.

If you’re a sucker for all things pink and have a sweet tooth, you’re in for a treat. This KitKat might look like the popular Sakura-flavoured KitKat from Japan, but it’s not. Sorry to disappoint you.

According to The Independent, this version of KitKat was first launched in Europe exclusively in UK’s Tesco last year, following its release in Japan and Korea.

Swiss manufacturer Barry Callebaut has partnered with Nestlé to come up with KitKat Ruby.

It was stated on their website that the pink coloured chocolate is naturally derived from ruby cacao beans.

Unlike the chocolates currently in the market (Milk, Dark and White), Barry Callebaut describes the taste of Ruby chocolate as “neither bitter, milky or sweet, but a tension of fresh berry fruitiness and luscious smoothness.”

Reviews

If you’re still undecided on whether to purchase KitKat Ruby, here are some reviews to help you out.

To the writers at The Independent, KitKat Ruby “tastes fairly similar to the white chocolate variation, with its berry undertones giving it a sweet kick.”

The team at The Guardian described the latest pinkish KitKat as “creamier than milk chocolate, less sickly than white chocolate, with just a hint of a zingy fruit-yoghurt tang…smells like a Lush store… the teeth-achingly sweet coating, sticks the boot in further with a cloyingly waxy mouthfeel.

“It is semi-sweet, slightly perfumed, a bit like those Special K red berries. It is a flavour that manages to linger yet is deeply forgettable. In short, not for me.”

I haven’t had the chance to try this version of KitKat but despite the mixed reviews, taste is subjective and I certainly can’t wait to sink my teeth into em’! After all, maybe ang mos have different taste; they can’t tahan durians while we love them to the core.

KitKat Ruby is available locally on RedMart for S$2.50.

Alternatively, if you enjoy exclusivity, they offer a limited edition version which incorporates rose for S$8.50.

That’s one expensive Kitkat, but as a fan, why not?
