I’m sure many of us are looking to the National Day Rally on 29 August with much anticipation, especially after how chaotic the past year or so has been.
In contrast with the seriousness of the National Day Rally, however, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has been providing us with much laughter the past few days.
National Day Rally Trailer Featuring PM Lee’s Magical Blue Cup
On Friday (27th August), PM Lee dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming National Day Rally on his social media pages.
“Hello everybody, I’m here at Mediacorp studios, preparing for my National Day Rally,” PM Lee says as the trailer begins. As he continues to speak, cinematic, slow-motion shots of the studio and of PM Lee are shown.
As it turns out, the star of the show in this trailer is not PM Lee, surprisingly.
Instead, all attention falls on PM Lee’s blue ceramic cup as it comes on screen. “I’m doing (the National Day Rally) differently this year because of COVID-19,” says PM Lee as the camera slowly pans around his cup.
Wait, blue ceramic cup?
Yep, it’s the one and only iconic blue cup from past National Day Rally speeches—you know, the one said to bestow magical powers upon whoever drinks from it.
If you’re wondering where exactly this rumour came from, its first appearance was in PM Lee’s April 2020 COVID-19 address, where PM Lee was shown taking a sip from the cup every time he switched languages.
This gave the illusion that drinking from the cup would give its user magical language abilities like speaking a new language, or being able to code-switch perfectly.
Well, if that isn’t the solution to everybody’s bilingual problems.
Needless to say, it instantly shot to fame and became the subject of many, many memes.
All I can say is, whoever made that trailer knew exactly what would get Singaporeans’ attention.
PM Lee’s Second Troll Moment
This is not the first time PM Lee has provided Singaporeans with much laughter.
In fact, just a few days ago, he had the entire Singapore laughing over his hilarious mic test incident with US Vice-President Kamala Harris.
In the video, someone off-screen can be heard asking both PM Lee and US Vice-President Kamala Harris to do a “microphone check”, starting with Ms Harris.
The US Vice-President completes her mic test with a quick, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5.”
PM Lee then goes next, giving a short pause before he says, “Hello, hello. Baa baa black sheep,” eliciting a round of laughter from the present audience, including Ms Harris herself.
In good humour, Ms Harris can even be heard continuing the song in the video: “Have you any wool?”
Who said politicians don’t have a sense of humour?
