He notes that while Singapore is a small country, it is not powerless. Over the past weeks, he has spoken with leaders from Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.

These discussions focused on strengthening trade and investment links, especially as the United States adopts a more inward-looking approach.

PM Wong highlights that these countries agreed not to follow the US in turning inwards. Instead, they are committed to deepening cooperation among themselves.

He gives the example of Singapore’s plans to work more closely with Indonesia on energy and food security. He also mentions the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with Malaysia as a major project in the pipeline.

Trade and Regional Partnerships

The video also features PM Wong sharing that Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong recently attended an investor conference for the SEZ.

PM Wong also talks about growing intra-ASEAN trade and investments, and enhancing collaboration in new sectors such as the digital economy.

He points to ongoing talks with the European Union, stating that although Singapore already has Free Trade Agreements with the EU, both sides can do more together. He suggests taking concrete steps towards an ASEAN-EU Free Trade Agreement.

He also mentions the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPATPP) and the possibility of forming a partnership with the EU through this framework.

We will stay nimble and look out for new opportunities. In this changed world, our mission is clear: to steer Singapore through the storm, and secure a brighter future for you”.
