Online Theory Test for PMD Riders Remains at a Discounted Price Till the End of the Year

Remember the days when the only thing we feared on the streets was a speeding Personal Mobility Device (PMD) that could crash into you at any moment?

These PMD riders invariably played loud, annoying music as they rode, which was often worst than getting hit.

Thankfully, the government took swift action to keep their PMDs off our footpaths as there were simply too many accidents occurring.

They were banned from footpaths in late 2019, to the joy of many residents.

By the end of this year, however, PMD riders will also need to pass a theory test before they can use their device in public spaces.

Fortunately for them, it won’t be too pricey.

Online Theory Test for PMD Riders Remains at a Discounted Price Till the End of the Year

Good news for e-scooter and e-bike riders: the discounted price for your online theory test will remain in place until the end of the year.

Riders were told that the test would cost S$10 per attempt if they registered after 30 Sep, but that date has been pushed back to the end of the year.

This means that the test will cost S$5 for three more months. Yay!

It’s subject to the 7% GST, of course, but it also covers one free re-test in case of failure.

The announcement was made by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a Facebook post yesterday (22 Sep).

“As demand for delivery services remain high, riders have told us that they would like to have more time to prepare for and pass the Active Mobility Mandatory Theory Test,” it said.

“We’re therefore extending the discounted test fee period to allow our riders to enjoy the savings.”

LTA also reminded riders that from 1 Jan 2022, they’ll only be able to ride in public spaces if they have passed this theory test.

The test will be available in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil. LTA has uploaded e-handbooks online to help riders prepare for the tests.

Since the minimum age for riding PABs and PMDs is 16, you’ll have to be at least 16-years-old to take the tests.

Adults who are supervising riders below 16 will also be required to pass the theory test.

The Passing Score is 80%

The aim of the test is to improve awareness of active mobility rules, code of conduct, and safe riding practices.

Power-assisted bicycle users will have 40 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions, while PMD riders will have 30 minutes to answer 30 multiple-choice questions.

The passing score for both tests is 80%. Those who pass will receive a digital certificate with no expiry date.

Next year, if an LTA officer comes up to you while you’re riding your device, you’ll need to show this certificate to them to prove you’re a legal rider.
