A stallholder at a coffee shop in Boon Keng refused to sell food to a customer, causing the police to be called in not once, but twice.
However, the story is much more nuanced than it seems to be. Here’s why.
Stallholder at Boon Keng Coffee Shop Refuses to Sell Sardine Baguette to a Customer; Police Subsequently Called In
On Tuesday (3 December), a woman visited the Food Haven coffee shop located at 5 Upper Boon Keng Road, which is just a short distance from Kallang MRT.
The woman wanted to buy a sardine baguette from the Vietnamese food stall. However, this proved to be a much more difficult venture than she expected.
The stall refused to sell the sardine baguette.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the woman then asked why the stallholder could not sell the baguette to her. In response, a male employee at the stall allegedly started to swear at the woman and asked her to leave.
Talk about a food haven.
Eventually, the altercation culminated in the police having to be called in.
Similar Altercation Occurs Three Days Later; Police Called In Again
According to Shin Min Daily News, this is far from the first time that the woman has tried to purchase from the stall. Whenever the woman tried to do so, the stallholder would reportedly refuse to sell to her.
For instance, three days after the initial incident above, the woman and her family returned to the coffee shop for dinner. This time, the woman brought her brother along.
After the woman’s brother found out about his sister’s encounter with the stallholder, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He went up to the Vietnamese stall and started to argue with a male employee from the stall.
At the same time, two members of the public tried to de-escalate the argument, while another coffee shop employee attempted to pull the Vietnamese stall’s male employee aside.
Of course, most of that was to no avail. Eventually, you guessed it — the police had to be called in once again.
We bet the police officers who signed on were thinking: “Did I sign up for this? For arguments about baguettes?”
The Stallholder’s Side of the Story: Baguettes Could Not Be Sold as Another Customer Had Pre-Ordered Them Earlier
The question here is this — did the stallholder refuse to sell the baguettes out of spite, or was there good reason for their refusal to sell?
The owner of the Vietnamese stall shared with Shin Min Daily News that they genuinely could not sell the sardine baguette to the woman because another customer had already pre-ordered ten baguettes earlier.
She further explained that as the stall uses fresh ingredients to make its baguettes, there is a limited quantity of baguettes which it can sell daily.
This was further worsened by the fact that the stall was slated to close on Sunday (8 December), which meant that the stall’s ingredients were in even shorter supply than usual.
