Police: Using Phones While Crossing Is Not An Offence, But You Shouldn’t Do It For Safety Reasons

From reading every other article I’ve written, you would know that I am not your conventional human being.

Unconventional in the sense that I have incredibly odd tendencies. Like my slow and wonky reflexes. Nobody asked! I know.

I’m just going to casually ruin yet another peaceful afternoon and tell you all about it in great detail. My slow and wonky reflexes as told by yours truly.

I don’t react very well to oncoming vehicles. I usually walk towards them. The rumours are very much true, I am weird.

The likelihood of somebody else having the same tendencies is rather slim. You are all intellects while I am not.

What could increase the chances of one mimicking my stupidity? Being awfully engrossed with season 4 of The Good Place on Netflix… And using their phones while crossing a junction!

Not An Offence

Now if you’re a chronic smartphone addict, you’d be pleased to know that it isn’t an offence. You are lawfully permitted to cross the road and double text your crushes!

The Singapore Police Force clarified that pedestrians caught in the act will not be charged $1,000.

The notice was posted following the circulation of a rumour which said otherwise.

For Safety Reasons

The police stated that while using mobile devices when crossing the road is not prohibited, members of the public are strongly advised to put them away for safety purposes.

The use of communication devices could be a distraction to the traffic condition and the movement of vehicles.

According to The Straits Times, an alarming number of 887 pedestrians were injured in road accidents in 2018, and there were 39 fatal accidents in the same year.

A video featuring the latest amendments to the Highway Code accompanied the long Facebook post.

The public is also advised to avoid spreading false information that could cause public alarm.

Folks, do remember to stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Put the phones down! Whatever it is can wait. Stay safe!
